What is a Birth Injury?

A birth injury is physical harm sustained by a baby before, during, or shortly after delivery. While some birth injuries may occur despite proper medical care, others result from avoidable mistakes made by doctors, nurses, hospitals, or other healthcare providers.

Birth injuries can range from minor conditions that resolve over time to severe and permanent disabilities requiring lifelong medical treatment and assistance. In many cases, prompt recognition and appropriate medical intervention can prevent or minimize these injuries.

Birth injuries are different from congenital disabilities or genetic disorders. A birth injury typically occurs because of trauma, oxygen deprivation, improper use of medical equipment, or other complications associated with labor and delivery.

Common Types of Birth Injuries

Several types of birth injuries are commonly associated with complications during labor and delivery.

  • Cerebral Palsy: Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects movement, muscle control, and coordination. It may develop when a baby experiences oxygen deprivation or brain damage during childbirth.
  • Brachial Plexus Injuries: The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that controls movement and sensation in the arm and shoulder. Excessive force during delivery can damage these nerves, resulting in conditions such as Erb's palsy.
  • Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE): HIE occurs when a baby's brain does not receive sufficient oxygen and blood flow. This condition can lead to developmental delays, cognitive impairments, and permanent neurological damage.
  • Skull Fractures: Difficult deliveries or improper use of delivery tools can cause fractures to a newborn's skull, potentially leading to brain injuries and other complications.
  • Facial Nerve Injuries: Pressure during delivery or improper use of forceps can damage facial nerves, causing weakness or paralysis in parts of the baby's face.
  • Fractured Bones: Newborns may suffer broken collarbones, arms, or other fractures during difficult deliveries, particularly when excessive force is used.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Although rare, spinal cord injuries can result from severe trauma during labor and delivery and may lead to paralysis or other long-term impairments.
