About

Carlos A. Hernandez is an experienced and dedicated senior trial lawyer at Carpenter & Zuckerman. With a rare authenticity and a genuine desire to see justice prevail, Carlos approaches every case with compassion and resolve.

The idea of “paying it forward,” articulated by Ralph Waldo Emerson, is and has been a driving force in Carlos’ career and personal life. As a bilingual attorney and son of Mexican and Cuban immigrants, Carlos champions giving an authentic voice to individuals and communities in need, including those from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

The opportunity afforded at Carpenter & Zuckerman, allowing Carlos to use his legal skills alongside the firm’s resources and collective expertise to obtain justice for injured clients, brings him deep fulfillment. Carlos credits the firm’s 30-year winning history with empowering him to successfully take on a variety of civil rights and personal injury cases against well-funded corporate defendants and various federal, state, and municipal entities. Since joining Carpenter & Zuckerman, Carlos has obtained verdicts and settlements in excess of $200 million.

Before joining the firm in 2018, Carlos served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Philip S. Gutierrez of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and the Honorable Gregory W. Alarcon of the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles. He also worked as a law clerk at NBC Universal. Prior to becoming an attorney, Carlos was an educator and served as a teacher, union chapter chair, and principal.

When he is not working, Carlos enjoys exploring Los Angeles and the surrounding area, taking trips near and sometimes far, attending musical performances, cooking, Barry’s Bootcamp, and spending time with loved ones, including his dog, Bruma.

Education

Carlos’s academic path reflects his commitment to excellence. He graduated from Occidental College, pursued a master’s degree at California State University, Northridge, and earned his law degree through Southwestern Law School’s accelerated program. Carlos’ article, “From Arlington to Tennessee: The Beginnings of a Chevron Deference Farewell Tour,” was published in Vol. 47 of the Southwestern Law Review.

Employment

An active member of the legal community, Carlos serves on both the Board and Executive Committee of the LGBTQ+ Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, reflecting his commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in the legal profession.
